As you can see from the pictures below we are fairing into a layer of white material. This white material is mixture I made up with resin, cabosil and micro balloons, about 10 years ago. In those 10 years it hardened to the likings of a brick. This material gives us a surface to fair to without sanding into the fiberglass structure. It was so hard that it took us 2 1/2 months of sanding to complete the hull.
We went through 1 air board and 2 orbital pneumatic sanders. But the results were worth the effort when you see the completed hull. |

As you can see from this picture my brother Ron is filling/fairing into a layer of white material. I go along the hull and mark the high and low spots. We sand (grind) the high spots and fill the low spots. This continues back and forth about 5 times down the side of the hull until it is ready. |
Then I go over it again about 4 times filling and sanding out the pin holes. This section above the rub rail shows the pin holes filled in with glazing putty (red areas). Then it is fine sanded with 400 Wet Sand Paper before the paint is applied. |

This shows the starboard aft section above the rub rail, completed ready for paint.
If you look below the rub rail that is covered in plastic you can see how rough it was when we started

Here is a shot of Ron working on the transom with a pneumatic airboard. The transom is about 10 feet wide and 6 feet high. This job took him 2 weeks of solid work. |

First coat of paint done! |
Here we have applied the first coat of bottom paint to the port side. Even though the rest of the boat wasn't faired and ready for paint we needed to do something that would show some progress was being made. |

Here I am applying the first coat of bottom paint to the starboard side.
Notice the cribs holding up the ship. Well we had to fair and paint around the barrels holding up the hull, then move them to different finished sections as we went along. And at the same time keeping the hull level. Moving barrels and cribs took 2 days.
Note: The cribs were originally under the keel.

This is a good side view showing the painting is done on the topsides, and part off the bottom paint below the water line. |
